Saturday in Estonia
This morning we crossed the Baltic Sea to Tallinn, in the country of Estonia. the old town of Tallinn was added to the world Heritage UNESCO list in 1997 as it is one of the exceptionally well- preserved medieval trading city on the Baltic Sea. It was once part of the USSR having gained its independence as recently as 1991. It has a similar history to Finland being dominated by both Sweden & Russia. It is an extremely progressive country, due to their idea that the internet was a basic human right. It is now a global trendsetter in technology. The city of Tallinn still does have a lot of old world charm. Here are some of the sites during our day here:
The Russian cathedral- much of the population remains Russian
There are however many Lutheran churches, that being the dominant religion after the reformation.
Part of the walled fortress
These spooky characters were in the courtyard
We climbed this stair case so we could get a better look of the city as we walked “the Wall” (Patty’s daughter Natalie & her husband Calvin joined us for our our time here and in Helsinki)
The 2 columns grace the entrance to the city. Notice the modern hotel in the background. The top floor was once occupied by the KGB, as many of the rooms were bugged unbeknownst to the aristocrats who stayed there.
We were entertained by a bit of jousting. Demonstrations against The war in Ukraine, Estonians are especially sympathetic.
We visited the oldest pharmacy in all of Europe; some rather unique concoctions for what ails you!
Just a
bit of whimsy along the street.
The Cross monument that overlooks Freedom square.
