Wednesday- on to Geiranger

 We drove through more beautiful countryside on our way to the ferry in Hellesylt, however there was a very large cruise ship in port and because there were so many people on the ferry there was no room for cars 😳. So the decision was made to drive the 80 miles along the scenic road which turned out to be a great decision. 







These are called shelf farms, they are scattered around the mountainsides

Once we arrived in Geiranger we took a fast speed boat ride into the fjord seeing some interesting sites. 

The famous seven sisters waterfalls which cascades 800 ft

Facing the Seven sisters is “The Suitor”. Legend has it this powerful waterfall is endlessly trying to impress the maidens across the way. Supposedly the waterfall forms a bottle shape, because the constant rejection has driven the suitor to drink. 


Legend also has it that some of the trolls have turned to stone, can you find the face of this one?

Tonight we are staying at a lovely hotel on the Fjord. It continues to be unseasonably hot so we jumped into the cool (68 degrees) sea before getting cleaned up for dinner.

Made it to Helsinki

We made our way to our Vrbo after arriving in Helsinkiround 2:30 pm.  How fortunate there is a grocery store acoss the street so we picked up a few supplies as we will be in Helsinki until Sunday. On of our companions on the trip (Rich Hansen) has family here, so we had a lovely visit from his cousin, wife & daughter. We picked their brains on a variety of topics, language, food, culture, which I’m sure will come in handy. Much of the architecture is quite stark, remains of the Russian influence. We were in luck to find a Thai restaurant close by for dinner and now early to bed.  The kitchen at our apartment, interesting wall art, getting ready for our guests.

Saturday in Estonia

 This morning we crossed the Baltic Sea to Tallinn, in the country of Estonia. the old town of Tallinn was added to the world Heritage UNESCO list in 1997 as it is one of the exceptionally well- preserved medieval trading city on the Baltic Sea. It was once part of the USSR having gained its independence as recently as 1991. It has a similar history to Finland being dominated by both Sweden & Russia. It is an extremely progressive country, due to their idea that the internet was a basic human right. It is now a global trendsetter in technology. The city of Tallinn still does have a lot of old world charm. Tuesday - Loen to Stryn/Orste

 We had a pretty leisurely start to our day. Our first stop was Borgund Stave Church which was built in 1180. It has survived because the entire church is built out of wood that is slathered in tar and then covered in powdered charcoal which protects it from fire, the elements and animals, it was also built on a stone foundation ( so no wood touches the ground).  These pine trees are trimmed of their branches so that they actually become stronger years before they are felled and used to build the Stave churches.  Another ferry ride Waterfalls a tunnels everywhere. This tunnel was 6 miles long.  More by beautiful farm land One of many glaciers on the mountain tops This is the Jostedalsbreen glacier - the largest on the European mainland.  After our stop at the glacier we drove on to the town of Loen to take the skylift “From fjord to sky in five” - it is one of the steepest cable cars in the world rising 1000 meters (,6 mile).
